Low Cost Marriage and Family Counseling

For those in relationships where a relationship is on the rocks, low cost marriage counseling can be a great way to get back on track. For many couples, it isn’t just the cost of counseling that is a problem, it is also the lack of availability. Some local marriage counselors are nonprofit and offer free services to those in need, but others charge a nominal fee. Because of this, low cost marriage counseling can be a great alternative for low-income couples who want to try out marriage counseling with the confidence that it will not negatively affect their relationship.

There are several national organizations that provide low cost marriage counseling. The National Marriage Counseling Association (NCCA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free or low cost marriage counseling to those in need. Some of their programs are temporarily suspended because of a lack of funds, but they are hopeful to resume programs as soon as possible. Some of the services offered through NCCA are marriage counseling, group therapy, and family counseling. Military couples therapy through the Department of Defense, domestic violence couples therapy through the Violence Prevention Office (VPPO), and same sex couples therapy through GLBT National Counseling Services (GNC).

Veterans Benefits and Family Services (VFHS) provide low cost marriage counseling to veterans. The main goal of VFHS is to help returning veterans reestablish connections with their family and the community. Many former military members return home to a stressful lifestyle and inadequate mental health services. This is an unfortunate reality for many who served our country honorably. If you are a veteran, you may be able to receive low cost marriage counseling with veteran treatment centers.

In addition to the nationally recognized benefits that come with VFHS, there are several other ways that couples and families of military personnel can receive assistance. The Department of Defense is one of many federal agencies that offer marriage counseling to active duty service members, retired military couples, and their spouses. The VA offers marriage and family counseling for the spouses of military personnel who are suffering from separation or divorce. The Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) counseling service also provides marriage and family counseling to spouses of active duty personnel, and divorce or separation cases for those who are separated but not discharged.

Many state mental health agencies offer marriage and family counseling to those who need assistance. These state mental health agencies are administered by different partners. One agency administers the state programs; another distributes counseling materials to veterans and active duty military couples; and the third partner offers marriage and family counseling to other individuals who may be interested in it. These state mental health agencies are usually limited by the resources that they have available, so if you need additional help, you may need to try to contact other state mental health agencies.

If you are a military veteran or a member of the armed forces, you may be eligible for free marriage and family counseling. If you are a reserve member of the Coast Guard, the Navy or the Air Force, you may also qualify for free counseling. For those who are active-duty service members, there are a number of organizations that provide free counseling for active-duty personnel. These include: the Armed Forces Health Psychology Study Center, The National Center for Family Therapy, and the Family Warrior Project.
